WellSpan staff share their favorite healthy summer activities

How do you stay healthy during the summer? Is your secret exercise, eating right, relaxation, a combination of all three or something else? WellSpan employees share what they enjoy most about summer and how they personally make healthy choices.

I look forward to summer because of the extra daylight hours and warm weather. It is my favorite time of year because I enjoy spending time outside. Some of my favorite activities are golfing, walking, biking and our annual family vacation. When golfing, I walk whenever possible. I try to take advantage of the longer daylight hours by taking long walks with my wife and our miniature Australian shepherd. My son and I recently purchased a canoe and have spent several great days on the lake. If that's not enough exercise, I spend a few hours on the property working on the landscaping (which means mostly weeding).

pool-kids-jumpOne of my favorite places to be during the summer is pool side or walking in the park. A key to being able to enjoy the outdoors is to apply sunscreen before going out. With every wipe of a towel or contact with water the sunscreen on our skin is removed so reapplying often is very important. My favorite summer memories include a big floppy hat to keep me cool and cover my face ears and neck. For more information on how to keep you and your family sunburn free visit

produce-berriesThe best part of summer for me is all the local fresh fruits and vegetables. Tomatoes taste the best when right off the vine or from the local stands. There is an abundance of watermelons, cantaloupes, blueberries and peaches. The local corn, peppers and zucchini also rank as some of my favorites. Variety is everywhere and it is a great time to make sure that you incorporate this abundance in our daily meal plan.
